So, setting up a blog is obviously a 4am kind of thing, and I don’t know another recording that captures insomnia better than Janis Joplin’s version of “Little Girl Blue”, a rare example of a time when your favourite version of a song isn’t the first one you heard (Nina Simone’s). My rule always was, out of respect for the artist, you shouldn’t record something unless you can add to it. Most versions aren’t better than the original, but if anyone was gonna do it, it would be Janis (or Amy, but that’s another post). So, if you haven’t heard it, treat yourself: Janis Joplin, Little Girl Blue
Sit there, count your fingers.
What else is there to do ?
I know how you feel,
I know you feel that you’re through.
Sit there, count your little fingers,
My unhappy little girl blue
Sit there, count those raindrops
feel ’em falling down, honey all around you.
Honey don’t you know it’s time,
I feel it’s time,
Somebody told you ’cause you got to know
That all you ever gonna have to count on
Or gonna wanna lean on
It’s gonna feel just like those raindrops do
When they’re falling down, honey, all around you.
Oh, I know you’re unhappy.
Sit there, go on, go on
And count your fingers.
I don’t know what else have you got to do.
And I know how you feel,
And I know you ain’t got no reason to go on
And I know you feel that you must be through.
Oh honey, go on and sit right back down,
I want you to count, count your fingers,
my unhappy, my unlucky
my little girl blue.
I know you’re unhappy,
honey I know just how you feel
